Kepemimpinan Jenderal TNI (Purn) Wismoyo Arismunandar

Saya first encounter dengan Pak Wismoyo Arismunandar saat masuk Kopassandha. He serves as Deputy Security Assistant (Waaspam) Danjen Kopassandha with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, while I was Second Lieutenant.

At that time we only knew that he was the brother-in-law of Pak Harto. His wife was the younger sister of Mrs. Tien Soeharto. At first, we were not so close to him. But in 1978, he became the Commander of Group 1 Para Commandos from Kopassandha. Thus, he became our group commander. At that time, I was the commander of Company 112. That’s when I started to get to know Wismoyo Arismunandar.

He was a commander who had a big influence on me. His teachings influenced my personality. His main teaching to his subordinates, besides the patriotism that became the characteristic of the ’45 generation, was to always think, do, and speak good. Don’t let yourself think badly of others. That was his teaching that always stuck in my heart.

He also always prioritized spirit and joy. Therefore, he always encouraged us to be spirited when clapping. Many seniors and colleagues scoffed at him because of his attention to this clapping issue. Trivial, perhaps, to them.

Although in my opinion, he is right. Starting from small things like this is important for us to pay attention to in order to cheer up and give spirit to the troops and ourselves.

The President of the United States is greeted with enthusiastic applause when entering Congress. Almost everyone is standing. The President of Indonesia is also greeted with applause when entering the DPR room. But it’s just ordinary. There is no joy and spirit emanating from it. Yet, this is important.

Until now, I consider the values that he taught very beneficial and very suitable with Indonesian and TNI culture. He taught that a brave person must be happy. He also taught that a leader must entertain his subordinates through singing, declamation, sports, and others. Because the subordinates have always been obedient to the commander’s orders.

For him, it doesn’t matter whether the Commander’s voice is good or bad. But what is important is the Commander’s intention to entertain his subordinates. That’s why he himself also practiced singing.

One time there was a ceremony at Kopassus. He, as the Commander of the Army, acted as the inspector of the ceremony. While I, who at that time was serving as the Commander of the Kopassus Training Center, was the commander of the ceremony. Before the ceremony, I had a premonition that he would ask me to sing.

That’s why a day before the ceremony, I practiced singing at home. I called a keyboardist and someone who often sent singers to Kopassus. I rehearsed singing a song from Ambon titled, O Ulate. Besides being a fun song, it wasn’t too difficult to sing. For decades, it became my go-to song.

The keyboardist informed me that they were invited to Kopassus to perform the next day. This was a coincidence, the universe was working in my favor. So I asked him to give me a signal when to start singing after the music played. But we acted as if we didn’t know each other when we performed the next day.

My feeling was right. After the ceremony was over, the music event began. Pak Wismoyo called and asked me to sing. I said I was ready.

People then laughed at me because I was considered unable to sing and would be nervous when performing. But they were immediately amazed after I sang the song O Ulate. Even though I had coordinated with the keyboard player.

The philosophy I received from Pak Wismoyo’s teachings is that a brave person must be happy, must be spirited. A leader must be able to create a cheerful atmosphere. That’s why Pak Wismoyo always recommended, among other things, that when leaders gather, they should be in the midst of their subordinates. If they sing, they have to sing even if it’s not good. If necessary, if the subordinates are happy to dance, then the leader must also dance with them. If subordinates like dangdut music, then the leader must also like dangdut music. If the subordinates like poco-poco, then the leader must be willing to poco-poco, not just sit and watch. That’s what I also learned from Pak Wismoyo, and it turns out subordinates greatly appreciate and feel close to the leader. That’s what Pak Wismoyo always emphasizes, “the unity of the leader and the subordinates.”

Therefore, I always try to make my environment cheerful, with music, happiness, and not allow a quiet atmosphere when gathering. He also rarely gets angry, and if he does, he quickly forgives. He often gives a second or even third chance to people who have done wrong. There is also a motto of his that I still use as a guide. Even in GERINDRA, I apply it. That is discipline is my breath, loyalty is my soul, honor is everything.

His teachings also include ojo ngerasani wong. It means do not speak ill of others. He also often quoted Pak Harto’s advice: Ojo adigang, adigung adiguna. In essence, do not be arrogant, do not be conceited.

In addition to providing philosophical teachings, he also always sets an example, a role model. Once we, his troops, were going to do parachuting exercises in Lampung. He still wanted to join. Even though his knee was injured. Eventually, we directed him to jump towards the lake. It was better for him to land in the lake and get wet than to worsen his knee injury.

He likes sports, swimming, volleyball, and shooting. He is good at shooting. He also includes encouraging me to learn to shoot. Especially since we from the Infantry Corps must be good at shooting. It would be funny if the Infantry Corps, which has a logo of two crossed rifles on the shoulder and collar of the uniform, cannot shoot.

Alhamdulillah, after I became a captain, a major, and so on, I became one of the best shooters among Kopassus and KOSTRAD. Every shooting competition, he often asked me to join his team. Both when he was the Pangkostrad and when he was the Commander of the Army. Apart from me, he also always included Tono Suratman, Rasyid Qurnuen Aquary, Syaiful Rizal, Zamroni in the KASAD team.

There is one more thing that impressed me about him. That is when I was about to leave for my first operation as Company Commander at the end of October 1978. At 8:00 PM the night before I took off at 4:00 AM from Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, he called me.

He asked about my preparations for the upcoming operation. I explained that all the equipment had been prepared. Starting from weapons, ammunition, compass, to medicines. But he still asked what else needed to be prepared. He repeated it several times. So I was confused about what else to answer. Because all the equipment had already been mentioned.

After that, he explained his intention. He conveyed that I was still young, responsible for 100 lives of soldiers, and would face mortal danger. Therefore, he reminded me to be close to the Almighty God. That’s when I realized. He then went into the room and when he came out, he brought a package. It was a prayer rug. He asked me to put the prayer rug in my backpack while on duty and to use it.
