Prabowo: Europe Needs Our Commodities, We Need Their Technology

Prabowo Subianto, President Joko Widodo’s successor, recently announced a significant breakthrough in Indonesia’s trade talks with the European Union. After a decade of tough negotiations, both parties have agreed to establish a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), effectively creating a free trade pact. According to Prabowo, this agreement will allow Indonesian goods to enter the European market without facing any tariffs. He emphasized that the CEPA reflects a mutually beneficial relationship between Europe and Indonesia, with Europe requiring Indonesia’s commodities and market access, and Indonesia benefitting from Europe’s advancements in technology, science, and investment. In addition to finalizing the CEPA negotiations, which had been stalled for a decade, Indonesia and the EU have also agreed on a visa cascade system to facilitate the process for Indonesian nationals to obtain multiple-entry visas to the Schengen area. This development marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s economic relations with the European Union.
