Advocating for Nutrition Education in School Curriculum: A Must-Have Initiative

The National Nutrition Agency (Badan Gizi Nasional, BGN) is pushing for the integration of nutrition education into the national school curriculum. This initiative aims to cultivate a generation of healthy, intelligent, and globally competitive Indonesians. According to Ikeu Tanziha, a member of BGN’s Nutrition Expert Council, structured nutrition education in schools is essential for instilling a comprehensive understanding of nutrition from a young age.

Nutrition education goes beyond food—it shapes the future. Children who grasp nutrition concepts will grow up healthy, think critically, and contribute positively to society,” Ikeu emphasized. Schools serve as ideal platforms for systematically teaching students about nutrition, helping them understand the connections between diet, health, and overall well-being, and encouraging healthier lifestyle choices. The proposed curriculum will cover basic nutritional concepts, food group classification, nutrient roles in bodily functions, and the consequences of unhealthy eating habits.

Additionally, nutrition education will raise awareness about balanced diets, empower informed dietary decisions, and act as a preventative measure against diet-related illnesses like obesity and diabetes. Practical skills in cooking and gardening will also be included to help students apply their knowledge in real life.

By integrating nutrition education into the school curriculum, a synergistic relationship between schools, families, and communities will be established, promoting balanced nutrition throughout society. BGN, responsible for national nutrition programs, has already implemented various educational initiatives, including social media outreach and promotional videos supporting the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) Program.

BGN calls on all stakeholders to support the integration of nutrition education into the school curriculum, aligning with Indonesia’s Golden Generation 2045 vision. Ikeu stressed that comprehensive nutrition education is essential for the success of the Free Nutritious Meals Program and for improving the overall quality of life in the future.
