Nutritious Meals Boost Kids’ Focus: Free MBG Program

The implementation of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) Program has proven to have a significant positive impact on children’s concentration levels, as evidenced by short-term memory assessments. This improvement is expected to play a crucial role in maintaining students’ motivation to learn effectively.

Research conducted in Aceh has shown that students who benefit from the Free Nutritious Meals program exhibit improved concentration levels. This development is promising as it not only contributes to better educational outcomes but also boosts children’s enthusiasm for learning, stated Ikeu Tanziha, Expert Council Member of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), during a press conference in Jakarta.

Similarly, a study carried out by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) revealed comparable outcomes. The MBG program has not only enhanced students’ focus and cognitive performance in regions like Bogor and Papua but has also proven particularly beneficial for those who previously skipped breakfast. For instance, a case study at State Vocational School 6 (SMK Negeri 6) in Medan highlighted a significant increase in attendance motivation and class concentration among students benefitting from MBG.

Ikeu emphasized the close relationship between concentration, attention, and the brain’s ability to process stimuli. She explained that concentration, being a cognitive function, plays a vital role in shaping brain development during a child’s early years. Various factors, including learning motivation, nutritional intake, psychological well-being, and physiological conditions, can influence a child’s ability to concentrate.

Nutrition, in particular, plays a crucial role in concentration. Key nutrients like protein, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids are essential for brain development and cognitive function, especially memory. Ikeu stressed the importance of ensuring adequate nutritional intake, especially proteins, iron, and omega-3, to support brain development and memory function.

The MBG Program aims to meet children’s nutritional requirements not just for physical growth but also to enhance cognitive potential and intelligence. Nonetheless, challenges persist, such as unhealthy eating habits among children and limited access to nutritious foods in certain regions. Therefore, collective efforts are necessary to ensure the successful implementation of the Free Nutritious Meals Program, providing long-term benefits for future generations and society as a whole, Ikeu concluded.
